Engagement

Audience interactions with content: likes, comments, shares or other actions depending on the platform.

Illustration: Engagement

Simple definition

Engagement groups the interactions an audience makes with content. Depending on the platform, it may include likes, comments, shares, saves, replies and other actions. Engagement rate relates those interactions to a chosen base so performance can be compared more clearly.

Formula and example

Example formula: engagement rate by reach = interactions ÷ reach × 100. If a post gets 800 interactions from 20,000 reached accounts, the rate is 4%. A follower-based formula answers a different question.

How to interpret this KPI

Good engagement is not just a high percentage. Look at interaction type, topic, format and intent. Saves can signal lasting usefulness, comments can show conversation, and shares can indicate strong distribution value.

Do not confuse it with

Do not mix follower-based, reach-based and impression-based rates. They use different denominators and should not be compared as if they described the same thing. Also separate organic engagement from paid-campaign engagement.

Practical use in Morocco

When assessing a creator in Morocco, compare content of the same format over similar periods. Use the median of several posts rather than one viral outlier, then add reach, views, publishing frequency and comment quality.

Best practices

  • Keep the same definition and denominator when comparing two periods.
  • Segment by platform, format, campaign and audience before drawing conclusions.
  • Always add context: objective, period, budget and data source.
  • Prefer your own first-party performance data over external benchmarks when available.

When a platform or analytics tool uses a different scope, its documented definition takes precedence. See our methodology for assumptions and limitations. FaceTube methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Which engagement-rate formula should I use?

Choose based on the question: followers for community size, reach for actual exposure, impressions for display frequency.

Are likes enough?

No. Comments, shares, saves and other actions provide important context.

Can Instagram and TikTok be compared directly?

Only with caution because formats, user behavior and metric definitions can differ.
