How to Calculate Engagement Rate in 2026

Direct answer:engagement rate measures interactions relative to a comparison base. The simplest formula is (interactions ÷ followers) × 100, but to evaluate the performance of a piece of content, (interactions ÷ reach) × 100 may be more relevant when reach is available. The key is to keep the same formula when comparing accounts or periods.

The problem: there is no single universal formula

A search for “calculate engagement rate” often returns percentages presented as if they were directly comparable. Yet a rate based on followers does not have the same denominator as a rate based on reach or views. Before interpreting a result, write the formula next to the number.

For an account, the follower-based method remains practical when you only have public data. For your own content, reach often provides a view closer to how people actually exposed to the content reacted. On video, views can also be used, provided you do not compare that rate with a follower-based rate.

Follower-based formula

(likes + comments + other included interactions) ÷ followers × 100.Define exactly what you include. If a tool only counts likes and comments, do not compare its result with an internal dashboard that also includes shares and saves.

Reach-based formula

interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100.It answers a different question: among the people exposed, what share interacted? It can therefore better reflect a piece of content's ability to trigger a reaction, whereas the follower-based ratio combines content quality with distribution.

Average or median?

When analyzing several posts, the median is often useful because viral content can heavily distort the average. Rank the rates of the last ten to twenty comparable pieces of content and take the middle value. Keep the average too: the gap between the two shows whether a few extreme posts are pulling performance upward.

Full example

An account has 25,000 followers. Its comparable posts average 850 likes and 40 comments. With the simplified follower-based formula, the rate is (850 + 40) ÷ 25,000 × 100 = 3.56%. If the same content reached 12,000 accounts, the reach-based rate is 890 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 7.42%. Both figures are correct, but they do not describe the same thing.

What is a “good” rate?

Avoid a universal threshold. The rate varies with account size, format, niche, country, audience maturity and distribution source. The most actionable comparison is often your own history: compare Reels with Reels, similar periods and the same formula. For a brand, add peers of comparable size and niche.

A high rate does not automatically mean commercial value. One hundred comments unrelated to the product may be less useful than twenty precise questions from potential customers. Qualitative analysis remains essential.

How to audit a creator

Look at a series of content, not just one post. Record median views and interactions, observe comment consistency, check unusual spikes and ask for audience data when the collaboration justifies it. For the Moroccan market, audience location and languages used can be decisive.

Why engagement can fall when reach increases

When content is distributed to a broader, less familiar audience, the denominator grows faster than interactions. A lower rate can therefore accompany strong growth in the absolute number of interactions. Always analyze rate, volume and reach together.

Mistakes that make benchmarks useless

Comparing Instagram with TikTok using the same reference, mixing sponsored and organic content, changing the formula without saying so, using one viral post, ignoring reach and treating all comments as equivalent are the most common mistakes. Document your method in a spreadsheet or dashboard.

Moroccan context

DataReportal estimated 22.8 million social media user identities in Morocco in October 2025, while noting that these identities do not necessarily correspond to unique individuals. This scale justifies finer local segmentation: a nationwide campaign, a Casablanca–Rabat campaign and a campaign aimed at a diaspora should not be evaluated in the same way.

Build an engagement dashboard that is genuinely useful

A simple dashboard can include, for each post, the date, format, topic, followers at the time of posting, reach, views, likes, comments, shares, saves and the rate calculated with a clearly named formula. Add an “objective” column: awareness, conversation, traffic or conversion. This keeps you from judging content designed for reach with the same criterion as content designed to generate direct messages.

Then group content by format. Calculate median and average over a period long enough to include several comparable posts. When the median rises while the average remains stable, your typical performance may be improving even without a new viral post. Conversely, a rising average with a flat median can indicate that one success is masking unchanged typical performance.

Engagement, reach and distribution: three different diagnoses

Imagine content that receives 1,000 interactions. With 10,000 people reached, the reach-based rate is 10%. With 100,000 people reached, it falls to 1%. Yet the second piece of content potentially generates much more visibility. The rate answers a proportion question; volume answers a scale question. Both should remain visible.

Add a third ratio: reach ÷ followers when that comparison makes sense for your internal analysis. It helps distinguish a reaction problem from a distribution problem. Content can strongly convince the people reached while being poorly distributed, or be widely distributed with relatively weak reaction.

How to use engagement in an influencer campaign

For creator shortlisting, use engagement as a filter, not a verdict. Then request audience geography, age distribution where relevant, median views for the purchased format and examples of sponsored content. A creator who performs very well with humorous content may not reproduce the same reaction in a complex product integration.

For a Moroccan brand, also define the role of language: Darija, Modern Standard Arabic, French, English or a combination. The right creator is the one whose audience, tone and format fit the brief. A high ratio with an off-target audience is still a poor purchase.

When to recalculate your benchmark

Recalculate your medians when your strategy changes significantly: a new format, a frequency change, rapid audience growth, thematic repositioning or a major paid campaign. Do not automatically mix performance from before and after a major change. Keep the history, however, to understand the trajectory.

Finally, record the definitions used by platforms at the time of analysis. Metrics and interfaces evolve. A documented method lets you know whether a variation comes from audience behavior or a change in measurement.

Example reading over 30 days

Suppose you publish eight pieces of content. Six fall between 2.5% and 4% follower-based engagement, one reaches 12% and another 1%. The average may look excellent because of the 12% spike, but the median will better describe typical performance. Then examine why the viral content exceeded the norm: topic, distribution, collaboration, current event or format. The goal is not to erase the exception, but to study it without letting it artificially define the whole account.

For client reporting, present interaction volume, rate, reach and calculation method together. Add an interpretation sentence: “the rate is rising while reach remains stable” or “reach is increasing sharply, diluting the rate but increasing total volume.” This turns a table of numbers into decision-making information.

How to keep this page up to date

FaceTube dates its reviews because platforms, interfaces and definitions evolve. During a revision, check official sources first, then the formula, examples and any screenshots. Do not change a benchmark only because a competitor publishes a new number: look for the methodology and period. An evergreen page is not a frozen page; it is a page whose core remains useful and whose few variable elements are easy to recheck.

Frequently asked questions

Which engagement formula should you use?

Use followers for a simple public comparison; use reach when you want to measure the reaction of people actually exposed. Always state the formula.

Should shares and saves be included?

Yes, if you have the data and use the same definition everywhere. For public data, likes and comments remain easier to compare.

Average or median?

Keep both. The median is more resistant to isolated viral content.

Does a high rate guarantee sales?

No. Engagement is only one indicator; conversion, audience fit and the offer also matter.

Can TikTok and Instagram be compared directly?

Not without caution. Formats, distribution systems and available metrics differ.

How many posts should you analyze?

There is no magic number. A recent series of comparable content is more informative than a single post.
