CPE

Cost per engagement: average spend for each measured interaction.

Illustration: CPE

Simple definition

CPE, or cost per engagement, measures the average spend required to generate an interaction counted by a campaign: a like, comment, share, save, engagement click or another action depending on the platform and objective.

Formula and example

CPE = advertising spend ÷ engagements. Example: MAD 1,200 spent for 300 engagements produces a CPE of MAD 4 per engagement.

How to interpret this KPI

A low CPE can indicate content that triggers interactions efficiently, but interaction quality matters. One hundred passive likes may not carry the same value as qualified comments, saves or actions that move people closer to conversion.

Do not confuse it with

CPE differs from CPC, which measures clicks, and CPA, which measures a defined acquisition or action. Before comparing campaigns, check exactly which interactions the platform includes in its engagement count.

Practical use in Morocco

For influencer or paid-social campaigns in Morocco, use CPE to compare creative designed to trigger reactions, but pair it with a KPI tied to the actual goal: traffic, leads, sales, video views or qualified reach.

Best practices

  • Keep the same definition and denominator when comparing two periods.
  • Segment by platform, format, campaign and audience before drawing conclusions.
  • Always add context: objective, period, budget and data source.
  • Prefer your own first-party performance data over external benchmarks when available.

When a platform or analytics tool uses a different scope, its documented definition takes precedence. See our methodology for assumptions and limitations. FaceTube methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Which actions count as engagement?

It depends on the platform and objective. Likes, comments, shares, saves and other interactions may be included.

Is a lower CPE always better?

No. You also need to evaluate interaction quality and its relationship with the campaign goal.

Are CPE and CPC the same?

No. CPE measures defined engagements, while CPC measures the average cost of a click.
