Impressions
Number of times content or an element is displayed, including possible repeat displays to the same user.

Simple definition
Impressions are the total number of times content, an ad or another element is displayed according to a platform’s counting method. The same person can generate multiple impressions, so impressions are not a unique-user metric.
Formula and example
There is no universal formula for creating impressions because the platform counts them. However, average frequency ≈ impressions ÷ reach. Example: 100,000 impressions and 40,000 reached accounts produce an average frequency of 2.5 displays.
How to interpret this KPI
More impressions can come from reaching more people or showing content more often to the same people. Read reach and frequency alongside impressions to understand the cause. Rising impressions with stable reach often indicate more repetition.
Do not confuse it with
Impressions and reach are not synonyms. Impressions count displays, including repeats; reach aims to count unique people or accounts according to the platform’s definition.
Practical use in Morocco
In a Morocco campaign report, keep impressions, reach and frequency together. This helps distinguish genuine audience expansion from repeated advertising exposure, especially when spend increases.
Best practices
- Keep the same definition and denominator when comparing two periods.
- Segment by platform, format, campaign and audience before drawing conclusions.
- Always add context: objective, period, budget and data source.
- Prefer your own first-party performance data over external benchmarks when available.
When a platform or analytics tool uses a different scope, its documented definition takes precedence. See our methodology for assumptions and limitations. FaceTube methodology.
Frequently asked questions
Can one person generate multiple impressions?
Yes. The same person may see content multiple times and generate multiple impressions.
Are impressions and views the same?
Not necessarily. A view may require additional criteria defined by the format or platform.
How can I estimate frequency?
Divide impressions by reach when both metrics use a compatible scope.
