CPV

Cost per view: average spend divided by the number of views.

Illustration: CPV

Simple definition

CPV, or cost per view, measures average spend divided by counted video views. What qualifies as a “view” can differ by platform, advertising format and objective, so the underlying definition must be checked before comparing results.

Formula and example

CPV = advertising spend ÷ counted views. Example: MAD 800 spent for 20,000 views produces a CPV of MAD 0.04 per view.

How to interpret this KPI

A low CPV means you are buying views at a lower cost, but it does not measure attention by itself. Add average watch time, completion rate, clicks or conversions to distinguish shallow views from meaningful exposure.

Do not confuse it with

Do not confuse CPV with CPM. CPM relates cost to impressions, while CPV uses views recognized by the platform. An impression can occur without becoming a counted view under a format’s rules.

Practical use in Morocco

In Morocco, compare CPV across similar creative and audiences on the same platform and in the same currency. For awareness video, pair CPV with completion; for performance campaigns, add cost per click or conversion.

Best practices

  • Keep the same definition and denominator when comparing two periods.
  • Segment by platform, format, campaign and audience before drawing conclusions.
  • Always add context: objective, period, budget and data source.
  • Prefer your own first-party performance data over external benchmarks when available.

When a platform or analytics tool uses a different scope, its documented definition takes precedence. See our methodology for assumptions and limitations. FaceTube methodology.
